In the United States and Canada, The Revenant opened in limited release on December 25, 2015, and over the weekend grossed $474,560 from four theaters in New York City and Los Angeles ($118,640 per screen), finishing twenty-third at the box office. It was the second-biggest theater average of 2015 behind the $130,000 four-screen debut of Steve Jobs. The film earned a total of $1.6 million from its two-week limited run before expanding wide on January 8, 2016, across 3,371 theaters. As of February 21, 2016, The Revenant has grossed $165.1 million in North America and $216.5 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $381.6 million, against a budget of $135 million.

Young Jesse Owens becomes a track and field sensation while attending the Ohio State University in the early 1930s. With guidance from Coach Larry Snyder, Owens gains national recognition for breaking numerous records. After heated debates, the United States decides not to boycott the Olympics in Nazi Germany. Overcoming racism at home and abroad, Owens seizes the opportunity to show Berlin and the world that he’s the fastest man alive.


Race is a 2016 biographical sports-drama film. It is the second feature biopic film about African American athlete Jesse Owens, who won a record-breaking four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. On October 1, 2014, Focus Features originally set the film Race a release date for April 8, 2016. In August 2015, the release date was changed to February 19, 2016. On February 15, an advanced screening of the film was shown at Mershon Auditorium at The Ohio State University, Jesse Owens’ alma mater. Stephan James and Owens’ two daughters were in attendance and addressed the crowd. The President of Ohio State, Michael V. Drake, also addressed the crowd and spoke briefly about Owens’ global impact and life at Ohio State.

In the United States and Canada, pre-release tracking suggested the film would gross $7–12 million from 2,915 theaters in its opening weekend, ahead of fellow newcomers Race ($4–7 million projection) and The Witch ($5–7 million projection). The film grossed $4 million on its first day and $11.8 million in its opening weekend, finishing third at the box office behind Deadpool ($56.5 million) and Kung Fu Panda 3 ($12.5 million).
